The Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) is a public research university founded in 2011 in Shenzhen, one of the most prosperous and dynamic metropolises in China in adjacency to Hong Kong. As part of its plan to have a renowned university that can enhance the city’s national and global competitiveness and sustainable development, Shenzhen is fully committed to the development of SUSTech as a top-tier global university that excels in research and the cultivation of innovative talents for the world. Professor Chen Shiyi, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and former vice president of Peking University is the current President of SUSTech.

Since establishment, the university has been widely regarded as a pioneer and innovator that catalyses the Chinese higher education reform, and has received world-wide attention as a promising young university of science and technology. In the “Nature Index 2016 Rising Stars” rankings, SUSTech is ranked 62nd among the global top 100 institutions with most significant growth in high quality research publications, and ranked as the third fastest growing institution in the world.

The academic programs at SUSTech focus mainly on sciences and engineering, complemented by selected programs in management science, humanities and social sciences. Currently, SUSTech has 2 school and 12 departments: School of Environmental Science and Engineering, School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Finance, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Oceanography, Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering, and Mechanical and Energy Engineering.

From the outset, SUSTech has sought to establish a top-rate international faculty body. 275 faculty members were hired by August 2016. Over 90 percent of the teaching and research staff at SUSTech are overseas returnees and more than 60 percent have educational or work experience at the world’s top 100 universities.

By September 2016, SUSTech full time students include 2,941 undergraduate students, 7 international undergraduate students and 294 graduate students. Student life is enriched through various means, including a residential college system, many student organizations and clubs, domestic and international competitions, and frequent guest lectures from national, regional and global experts in the arts and sciences. The university’s goal is to nurture students who are globally-minded, innovative, at the cutting-edge of research and practice in their fields, and also entrepreneurial.
