Lynker is hiring five scientists to work alongside existing NOAA-Office of Water Prediction (OWP) staff at the National Water Center (NWC) on the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa. This team will undertake analysis and recommendations on improved real-time flood forecast inundation mapping techniques; Provide existing inundation mapping techniques for use nationally at fine resolution using real-time stream forecast estimates; and develop the enhanced GIS and other data sets necessary to conduct this work. The team will also support table-top exercises for evaluating flood mapping services provided to stakeholders. Activities will include analysis and evaluation of existing flood mapping techniques used by the NWS and selected partners; Analysis and assessment of the geospatial data sets and hydraulic parameter information used for mapping techniques; Collaboration with partners and stakeholders to identify gaps and weaknesses in existing methods; and geoprocessing and algorithm development (i.e. programming) for automated workflows that produce large scale, high resolution flood mapping information.

Experience or skills should include graduate-level training in hydrologic and geospatial science, terrain modeling, and process-automation programming using Python, R or similar codes. Candidates will have a deep knowledge of hydrologic geospatial data processing, knowledge of hydrography and bathymetry datasets, several years’ experience with ESRI GIS applications and tools for processing large data sets used in hydrologic analysis, and a sound knowledge of the National Water Model’s operations and capabilities (http://water.noaa.gov).
