The Institute of Environmental Physics at Heidelberg University, Heidelberg, Germany is a leading institution in physical environment research. Our scientific mission as a branch of physics encompasses the investigation of the flow of energy and matter in our environment. Our current research directions are the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere and remote sensing, terrestrial complex systems and their modelling, aquatic systems, and paleoclimate. In addition, image processing in environmental sciences is associated with the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing at the University of Heidelberg, remote sensing of the atmosphere at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, and aerosol research at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.
