Founded in 1910, Southern Miss is a Carnegie Research University – High Research Activity, and was designated in 1981 as Mississippi’s flagship university for marine science by the Institutions of Higher Learning. The Department of Marine Science was founded in 1985 as the Center for Marine Science and in 1986 relocated to the John C. Stennis Space Center on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. Stennis is a “federal city” that boasts the world’s largest concentration of oceanographers, housing offices for NASA, U.S. Navy, NOAA, USGS, EPA and NGI.
