Postdoctoral Scholar - UC Water
The University of California, Merced is a dynamic new university campus in Merced, California. The University opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university in the 21st century. In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced offers research-centered and student-oriented educational opportunities at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels through three academic schools: Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences/Humanities/Arts.
The Sierra Nevada Research Institute is the largest research institute at UC Merced with representation from faculty across the campus. The SNRI is accepting applications for a postdoctoral research position with the UC WATER Security and Sustainability Research Initiative. The Mountain Hydrology Research Group at University of California, Merced seeks applications for a full-time postdoctoral scholar research position in hydrology and water resources. This position will carry out hydrologic modeling of the American River, with the goal of developing a fully integrated model using real-time snow data to improve both headwater and downstream reservoir operations. This position will involve assembling historical and real-time in-situ field measurements and remote sensing data to validating numerical models (primarily PRMS) that are increasingly important in understanding, modeling, and forecasting of hydrologic processes. The successful candidate will collaborate with a multi-campus team to model the river from the headwaters to groundwater recharge in the Central Valley. This project is part of the UC Water Security and Sustainability Research Initiative (http://ucwater.org/); the position is located at the UC Merced campus. The scholar will meet with stakeholders and water managers, and prepare manuscripts and reports based on the research.
Ph.D. in hydrology, water resources engineering or closely related field.
The candidate must have hydrologic modeling experience as well as ability to write and understand codes in Python, Fortran, MATLAB, and R.
Prior experience in hydrologic modeling (preferably using PRMS, DHSVM, SWAT, LPJ-DGVM/MC1) is also required.
Ability to work with guidance from principal investigator and collaborators. Excellent written communication skills; good organizational and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work in a team environment and interact with a broad range of colleagues.
Experience with fieldwork is preferred.
Interested individuals should submit 1) cover letter 2) Curriculum vitae, 3) a list of 3 references with contact information including mailing address.
