The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California San Diego (http://scripps.ucsd.edu) invites applications for one or more full-time Researcher positions to be funded by extramural research grants and contracts in any of the research areas listed below. The Researcher series at SIO parallels the Professor series in terms of research and service, but it carries no teaching requirements. Researchers receive nine-month appointments with 25% salary support from institutional sources. Researchers are expected to establish an externally funded research program that provides the remainder of their salary support, including an opportunity for summer salary. Researchers at SIO often obtain lecturer appointments in the SIO department and serve as graduate student advisors.
We seek a motivated, broad-thinking scientist to develop a vigorous research group and provide intellectual leadership in their field while complementing existing expertise in the Oceans and Atmosphere Section. We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in research as well as service toward building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. We anticipate hiring at the Assistant Researcher level, but exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for the Associate Researcher or Full Researcher levels.
Data Assimilation and Modeling: We seek outstanding candidates with expertise in techniques of regional or global ocean data assimilation and ocean modeling, which may include coupling with the atmosphere, sea ice, and biogeochemical components of the earth system. Research that uses these techniques may involve diagnosing processes, evaluating parameterizations, producing analysis products and/or assessing predictability in the system.
Large-Scale Sustained Observations of the Deep Ocean: We seek outstanding candidates with expertise in observing the deep ocean on the basin or global scale. The deep ocean is largely unexplored and has vast potential for improving our understanding of the climate system through innovative development of robotic ocean sensors or remote-sensing methods with sustained deployment strategies that lead to new long-term observations of ocean physics, biology, and chemistry. Research that uses these observations may involve studying ocean circulation, diagnosing the distributions and transport of heat and salt, and assessing the role of the oceans in climate.
Polar Science: We seek outstanding candidates with expertise in the theory, modeling or observation of the polar oceans, including coupling processes with the atmosphere, cryosphere and biogeochemistry. We are particularly interested in individuals able to establish connections between more than one element of the polar climate system to address key scientific questions involving ice-ocean interactions, polar climate feedbacks and their relation to climate variability and change.
The position requires a PhD in a relevant field and candidates should have a competitive record of publication, as well as evidence of the ability to conduct and fund an active research program consistent with career level. Salary will depend on the experience of the successful applicant and will be based on the UCSD pay scales.
