SSAI is seeking 3 Scientists/Programmers to support positions within the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD.

Land Model and Data Assimilation Support Scientist/Programmer: This position is designed for an early to mid-career scientist/programmer or numerical modeler with experience using and/or running coupled atmosphere and land models. This individual will serve as the “gate keeper” for land model and data assimilation system development and become the subject matter expert in development and documentation of the NASA GEOS-5 land modeling and data assimilation system. In addition, the selected candidate will:

  • Integrate science software and model parameters developed by GMAO science staff into the operational GEOS-5 system and perform associated tests
  • Assist in solving daily technical problems (as opposed to strictly scientific problems)
  • Ensure proper coordination with other model development groups in the GMAO
  • Maintain appropriate standards and interfaces to facilitate coupling of Land-Atmosphere-Ocean models in the broader NASA GEOS-5 system.

Requirements: BS in numerical land, atmospheric, or ocean modeling or a related field with 8 years of experience in designing, running, and analyzing output from standalone or coupled land, atmosphere, or ocean numerical models or data assimilation systems. (An MS degree is preferred and can be used to substitute for up to 3 years of experience. Extensive experience in FORTRAN programming is required. Experience in Python programming is highly desired, as is familiarity with relevant data formats (including NetCDF and HDF) and object-oriented software paradigms (e.g., ESMF). Expert knowledge of parallel computing processes and languages is also desired.

Atmospheric Chemistry Programming Support Scientist: We are looking for a motivated and passionate scientific programmer with experience writing FORTRAN code for large modeling systems to work with the GMAO in support of the development of the GEOS earth system modeling (ESM) and data assimilation system (DAS). The position entails ESM code development related to the interface between the model and the atmospheric chemistry components, and collaboration on this development with members of the Atmospheric Chemistry and Dynamics Laboratory at GSFC. Specific tasks include:

  • Development of code to handle the interface to new chemistry modules
  • Integration of new or updated chemistry modules from other developers
  • Testing and validation of the updated code.

Requirements: Masters in atmospheric or ocean sciences, atmospheric chemistry or computer sciences with 5+ years of experience programming complex scientific atmospheric or ocean models or their individual components. This should include working with parallel computing processes, languages, and hardware. Must have strong skills in FORTRAN programming.

GEOS Ocean Model Programmer: We are seeking a talented ocean modeler and programmer to support the development of the ocean component of NASA’s GEOS earth system modeling (ESM) and data assimilation system (DAS). This position is designed for an early to mid-career scientist/programmer or numerical modeler with commensurate experience developing and/or running stand alone and coupled ocean models.

Requirements: PhD in numerical land, atmospheric, or ocean modeling or a related field and at least 3 years of experience in designing, running, and analyzing output from standalone or coupled land, atmosphere, or ocean numerical models or data assimilation systems.
