Graduate research assistantships are available in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, University of Tennessee in Knoxville, beginning Spring 2018. Potential students should be interested in geochemistry and geomicrobiology, and be willing to focus their degree research on projects involving dynamic marine and coastal habitats, including salt marshes and seagrass meadows, or subsurface habitats like caves. Main assistantship duties include conducting field and laboratory research with Dr. Annette Summers Engel that combines aqueous, organic, and/or stable isotope geochemistry with environmental microbiology and metagenomics methods. Applicants should be highly motivated, have excellent writing, presentation, and computer skills, be capable of working in a team, and be committed to pursuing interdisciplinary research. Preference will be given to applicants who have a MS degree, who can demonstrate research productivity, and who possess specialized skills in geochemistry, microbiology, or bioinformatics.
