Term:  The Internship program schedule is flexible, slated to start around the beginning of the Fall 2017 semester and running through April 30, 2018 with the possibility of extension through the summer of 2018. The intern’s work schedule is also flexible and will reflect the goals and availability of the intern, but requires a minimum of 8 hours per week.

Note:  Only local candidates will be considered for this position.  Students interested in this position must have attained at least Junior-level status in an undergraduate degree program.  Graduate-level students will also be considered for this position.

No relocation assistance is offered for this position.

U.S. Citizenship, Permanent Residency, or other protected status under 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) is required for this position.  UCAR/NCAR will not sponsor a work visa (e.g., J-1, H1-B, etc.) for this position. 

About the Organization:

Located in Boulder, Colorado, University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) serves and participates in a collaborative community of researchers and educators who are dedicated to understanding the atmosphere -- the air around us -- and the complex processes that make up the Earth system, from the ocean floor to the Sun’s core. We manage the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) on behalf of the National Science Foundation and the university community.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) EarthCube initiative is a community-driven project aimed at creating an integrated environment for the sharing of geoscience data and knowledge in an open, transparent, and inclusive manner. EarthCube is governed and guided by its Leadership Council, Standing Committees, Teams, and Working Groups. The community-based EarthCube Science Support Office (ESSO) oversees and governs EarthCube project activities.

Job Overview:

The EarthCube Science Support Office Communications Intern will work closely with the ESSO Communications Specialist and will assist in all aspects of communication with EarthCube governing committees and community.

Responsibilities:

Communications Efforts

  • Specific projects will reflect the interests of the intern and the needs of the program but could include participation in some or all of the following:
    • Interview community members to generate user stories for the EarthCube.org blog
    • Write program-related articles about non-technical subjects (e.g. government agency collaborations, opportunities for community members)
    • Assist in implementing EarthCube’s social media strategy
    • Assist with exploring development of various custom modules supporting the communications functions of the EarthCube website

Reporting / Seminars

  • In the last week of the internship, the intern will be expected to give a seminar to the EarthCube Science Support Office (ESSO) describing their experience and outcomes of their work.
  • The intern will also be expected to attend ESSO meetings to report on the status of their project(s).

Community and Professional Behavior

  • Interns are part of a larger community at UCAR and NCAR and are expected to contribute positively to the UCAR/NCAR community and to conduct themselves in a manner appropriate to a professional environment.
  • Interns are expected to fully participate during their office hours.

Qualifications:

  • Required:
    • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program as a junior or senior or enrolled in a graduate level program at a university in the United States, with a degree program or coursework in communications or journalism.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Basic problem solving skills. Will exercise judgment when to ask for help. Consults with supervisor on larger job or community related issues.
    • Ability to work with a diverse group of peers.
    • Basic knowledge, through coursework, of communications and/or journalism.
    • Experience with social media
    • Ability and willingness to learn and use new tools and programs.
    • Ability to work in Boulder, Colorado at least 8 hours per week.
    • Ability to interact with mentors and peers in a manner that supports collaboration and inquiry.
    • Ability and willingness to work within guidelines and policies of organization and assigned work groups.
  • Desired:
    • Interest or experience with the geosciences preferred.
    • Interest or experience with content management systems (especially Drupal) and digital communications software preferred.
    • Basic knowledge, through coursework, of earth and/or computer science.
