The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) invites applications for a full-time scientist position to provide science supports to (1) ocean salinity remote sensing, (2) the Jason-3 altimeter mission, and (3) NASA’s Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC). The successful applicant will conduct research in the evaluation and applications of satellite measurements of sea surface salinity (SSS) from the Aquarius and SMAP satellites (especially in coastal oceans and marginal seas), and provide direct feedback to NASA’s SSS retrieval teams as part of NASA’s Salinity Continuity Project. The selected candidate will also support the Jason-3 mission by performing evaluations of current and future reprocessed Jason-3 products for sea level anomalies, interacting with the Jason-3 project data retrieval and processing team, and assisting in other project science tasks such as interfacing with the Ocean Surface Topography Science Team and organizing science team meetings. In addition, the successful candidate will provide science support to PO.DAAC related to data product assessment and user tools and services, and serve as the liaison between PO.DAAC and the oceanographic communities. The selected individual will publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals to promote the utility of PO.DAAC’s data products, and present results at related scientific meetings.

The applicant must have (1) demonstrated experience with the evaluation of satellite SSS products (especially in coastal oceans and marginal seas) and applications of these data to study oceanic processes and the linkages of SSS with terrestrial hydrology; (2) demonstrated experience with scientific application of satellite altimetry products such as sea level anomalies and surface currents. A minimum of two years of research experience beyond Ph. D in Physical Oceanography or related disciplines is preferred. Peer-reviewed publications that demonstrate the two areas of required experience mentioned above are necessary. In addition, familiarity with the basic principles of satellite altimetry and with PO.DAAC’s data products, tools, and services are preferable. Experience with synergistic use of satellite SSS with other satellite measurements such as sea level anomaly, ocean surface current, ocean color, precipitation, and soil moisture data is highly desirable. Strong statistical analysis skill and proficiency in data analysis programming skill (e.g., using Matlab and Python) are recommended. The selected candidate is expected to carry out research activities in support of the three aforementioned projects and is expected to publish research findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals as well as presenting in the related professional meetings.
