Dr. Margaret Zimmer is recruiting 1-2 hydrology Ph.D. students to start summer/fall 2018 in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Current lab research integrates field work and computational analyses to address questions regarding watershed hydrology, stream-groundwater interactions, and solute fate and transport in a variety of landscapes, with particular focus in California. Scales of inquiry span spatially from stream reach to regional watershed and temporally from event to multi-year. Students are encouraged to contact Dr. Margaret Zimmer to discuss specific research projects.

The Zimmer lab is motivated to maintain a productive, diverse, and inclusive lab environment and encourage students from under-represented groups to consider this program. In addition, UC Santa Cruz has several initiatives to help foster a welcoming environment for all (e.g. FirstGen InitiativeOffice of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion).

The UC Santa Cruz Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences is regularly ranked in the top ~15 Earth Sciences departments in the country. UC Santa Cruz is currently ranked 3rd worldwide for research influence. The campus is located in the Santa Cruz Mountains, overlooking Monterey Bay, a national marine sanctuary. Year-round opportunities for outdoor recreation are numerous (mountain biking, hiking, surfing, sailing, etc.). For more information about program requirements, please visit the department website. The departmental application deadline is January 5, 2018.

Interested candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Zimmer at margaret.zimmer 'at' ucsc.edu before the application deadline with information on research experiences and interests, motivations to pursue a Ph.D., and career aspirations.
