About the Department
The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences aspires to build a community of creative and critical thinkers that sets the geoscience agenda. The Department was ranked in the top 50 international programs in Earth and Marine Science by QS University in 2016 with research strengths in geodynamics, geochemistry and petrology.
The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Macquarie University is seeking applications from outstanding young isotope geochemists for two 2-year Fellowships. The project marks the start of a new overarching relationship agreement between Macquarie University and Thermo-Fisher Scientific. The collaboration will commence with the installation of the Macquarie GeoAnalytical-ThermoFisher Isotope Development Hub in early 2018. Phase 1 of this relationship involves the acquisition of two new ultra-sensitive, developmental mass spectrometers (Triton and Neptune) with 1013 ohm amplifiers which allow unprecedented analytical precision of isotope ratios allowing new scientific applications, including in situ laser analysis. Two MQ/Thermo-Fisher jointly funded EPS postdoctoral research associates will drive application and technology development. The positions will be available from April 2018 and specific research projects within the broader descriptions will be designed by the successful applicants in conjunction with relevant members of staff.
Broadly, the roles will focus on:
Fellowship 1: Development of protocols for analysis of Os and HSE isotopes and volatile transition metal stable isotopes (e.g., Hg, Mo) for tracing surficial and environmental processes using a combination of N-TIMS and (LA)-MC-ICPMS.
Fellowship 2: Development of protocols for analysis of non-traditional transition metal isotope systems (eg Mo, V, Cr) for tracing high temperature processes on terrestrial and extraterrestrial materials using a combination of TIMS and (LA)-MC-ICPMS.
To be considered for this position applications must respond to the selection criteria below and attach as a separate document in the application process (including a list of 3 referees).
- PhD Degree in Geology with an Isotope Geochemistry/Petrology emphasis and/or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated research capability including a track record of publications
- Thorough understanding and knowledge of analytical methods and data quality control in inorganic geochemistry.
- An understanding of chemical extraction and analysis development.
- Knowledge of analytical methods and principles of TIMS and/or LA-(MC)-ICPMS analysis, data handling, and expertise in data reduction methods for quantitative isotope analysis.
- Training and supervising staff and students in the laboratory.
- Building and managing relationships with key stakeholders.
- Ensuring safe work practices within a laboratory.
Salary Package: Level A from Step 1 AUD$70,374 to Step 6 AUD$88,420 p.a. plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading.
