Graduate Assistantship in Urban Hydrology, Urban Climate, and Environmental Change
A graduate assistantship is available in urban ecohydrology at Washington State University in Vancouver, WA, for a student motivated to earn a PhD (with prior MS) or an intense research-based MS.
Likely research themes include, but are not limited to: the “natural” urban water cycle, its relations to the urban heat island and climate, connections with urban vegetation, drought and stormwater tolerance, and green infrastructure. Specific thesis/dissertation foci will be determined collaboratively by the accepted student and supervisor Dr. Kevan Moffett.
Required qualifications include: strong physical science and mathematics or engineering background, familiarity with hydrology, strong writing and communication skills, at least some time spent at an English-speaking institution of higher education, and some research experience. Additional skills of value (desired but not required) include: programming experience; remote sensing image analysis experience, advanced GIS skills; hydrologic, heat-transfer, or atmospheric numerical modeling experience; independent field research experience; report or manuscript writing experience.
The position will begin as soon as possible (August 2018, January 2019, or August 2019) and is open until filled. Additional position(s) may be available on this theme in subsequent years. Funding of graduate tuition, stipend, and benefits will be supported for sufficient time to complete the degree (PhD or MS). Studies will be based fully on the Vancouver campus among the extremely productive, interdisciplinary, and collaborative natural science research cluster. Vancouver, WA is a fantastic city located in southwestern Washington State, USA, between the coast and the Cascades Mountains and just across the Columbia River from vibrant Portland, Oregon.
