A postdoctoral position is available in the Data Exploration Lab at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) in association with the department of Plant Biology, in the School of Integrative Biology, at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Matthew Turk and Dr. Amy Marshall-Colon are looking for a highly motivated postdoc to work on a project funded by the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR) aimed at generating virtual crops. This project includes development of a computational framework with a web-based user interface for integrating existing biological models and visualizing the output of the combined model network. The project postdoc will work closely with faculty and staff at NCSA as well as Dr. Marshall-Colon’s team in the department of Plant Biology, and collaborators in the labs of Dr. Stephen Long, UIUC, Dr. Jonathan Lynch, Penn State. 

The duties of the project postdoc will focus on model integration and development of the computational framework for combining biological models including the model integration package, web-based user interface, and model visualization.

 

Expertise in some or all of the following areas is desired: Computational modeling, Multi-scale and/or integrative modeling, Scientific visualization, Web-based user interface design, Data interoperability.

Strong candidates will also possess the following attributes:

- A strong publication record from their PhD (papers published, in press, or submitted).

 

- Creativity, independence, and the desire to learn new things.

 

- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

 

- Scientific software development

 

- Experience with open source development best practices and tools

 

All candidates must have received a Ph.D. in a relevant field. The position is available for 2 years, with the first year as a probationary period, and will include a competitive salary and full benefits.
