University of Hawai'i at Manoa, College of Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, invites applications for a full-time, general funds, tenure-track, faculty position, pending position clearance and availability of funds. To begin approximately January 1, 2019 or as soon thereafter as possible. The University of Hawai'i is a Carnegie doctoral/research-extensive university with a strong emphasis on research and graduate education. The Department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, and its undergraduate program is ABET accredited. Duties and Responsibilities 
To engage in teaching, research, and professional service activities under the missions of the CEE department and the University, which includes:

  • Teaching CEE undergraduate and graduate courses in applied mechanics, hydrodynamics, coastal and hydraulic engineering;
  • Developing and teaching new courses in emerging areas of sustainable coastal engineering in the field of expertise;
  • Conducting scholarly research with competitive external funding support;
  • Serving on departmental, college and University academic and professional committees; and
  • Performing related tasks as assigned.

 
Minimum Qualifications

  1. An earned Ph.D. (ABD will be considered; degree must be earned before date of hire) in civil engineering or a closely related field, specializing in the area of coastal engineering and hydraulics.
  2. Demonstrated ability as a teacher.
  3. Demonstrated research productivity and publication of scholarly materials.
  4. Potential to obtain competitive research grants.
  5. Excellent communication skills for meeting and conferring with others.

 
Desirable Qualifications

  1. Research focused on the following thrust areas in coastal engineering as applicable to the state of Hawai'i and Pacific islands such as (a) coastal water quality modeling, pollution mitigation and management; (b) prediction and mitigation of natural and man-made hazards, sustainable coastal development; (c) utilization of coastal resources for development of aquaculture or renewable energy, and (d) eco-hydrology, eco-hydraulics, and hydro-informatics.
  2. Ability and willingness to conduct teaching and research in an interdisciplinary setting.
