EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment, pulling together the resources of 30 Member States. We observe the atmosphere and ocean and land surfaces from Space using a system of satellites, 365 days a year, offering images and data to provide insights into weather situations, environmental hazards and climate change. Our work helps users worldwide to monitor changes in these to protect lives, lifestyles and properties. Developing the next generation of satellites, we look to shape our future.
We require a Climate Product Expert to work within the Climate Services Team, and to focus on the processing of satellite data to Level 1 in support of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (CS3). This is an opportunity to be involved with specific scientific developments related to the creation of fundamental climate data records for atmospheric sounding instruments measuring in the infrared and microwave spectrum. This will include the development and application of novel quality control methods for metadata and raw data, the development and validation of instrument corrections and calibration methods plus the derivation and of uncertainty estimates for Level 1 data products. The work also requires the compilation of relevant reports describing the developed methodology, its validation and application.
Alongside a university degree in Meteorology, Remote Sensing (or equivalent) you will need to demonstrate in depth knowledge and experience in the calibration of infrared and/or microwave instruments flown on meteorological satellites or similar missions. You will also have experience of scientific developments for instrument corrections, vicarious calibration and validation of satellite products and the ability to undertake programming using C/C++ and/or Fortran 95 as well as scripting languages such as Perl, Python and Shell.
The official languages of EUMETSAT are English and French. Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and have some knowledge of French.
We offer attractive employment conditions, with a competitive salary, comprehensive health and social welfare provision, and extensive relocation assistance, if applicable. Have a look at our website to find out more.
EUMETSAT is committed to providing an equal opportunities work environment for men and women and is seeking to recruit nationals from its Member States. Please see our website for further details.
