The Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering at the University of Toronto invites applications for a tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the areas of rock physics, geophysics, and geomechanics. The appointment is expected to begin on September 1, 2018, or soon thereafter.

Candidates must have a PhD in civil engineering, mineral or geological engineering, or a related discipline by date of appointment or shortly thereafter. The ideal candidate will demonstrate research excellence in one or more of the areas of rock physics, geophysics, or geomechanics with applications in the resource industries. Research experience that could be applied towards improved hydrocarbon reservoir characterization and exploitation, including carbon capture and storage activities are of particular interest. The Department hosts excellent facilities for this research including x-ray micro- and nano-CT systems, acoustic emission systems, and a polyaxial servo-controlled rock deformation system.  The successful applicant must complement and strengthen the overall capacity for research and teaching of several current faculty members in the Department. It is preferred that candidates have an undergraduate degree in engineering and be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer.

The successful candidate will be involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, and departmental service. Evidence of excellence in research and teaching is required.

The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence in research as evidenced primarily by the quality of published papers in top-ranked and field relevant journals, or a research pipeline that is at high international levels, the submitted research statement, participation in top conferences, presenting research at other prominent venues, other noteworthy activities in engineering that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, strong letters of reference from referees of high standing, and other documents submitted for review.

Excellence in teaching may be demonstrated by a strong statement of teaching philosophy, excellent teaching evaluations and demonstrated superior performance in other teaching related activities, including performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, or experience leading successful workshops or seminars, strong endorsements from referees, and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application.
