We seek a highly motivated, dedicated Postdoctoral Research Associate to take a leadership role and conduct innovative research for the Center for Advanced Bioenergy and Bioproducts Innovation (CABBI) at Iowa State University in Ames, IA.

The postdoc will work with Agronomy associate professor Emily Heaton and Agronomy assistant professor Andy VanLoocke as part of a broader team of soil scientists, ecologists, physiologists, ecosystem modelers, and engineers in the CABBI Sustainability Theme. Collaboration with researchers in the CABBI Feedstocks and Conversion themes and the other BRCs is encouraged.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will study environmental sustainability issues, particularly nutrient cycling, water quantity and water quality impacts of biomass crops. He/she will be responsible for measuring water quantity, water quality, and nutrients in the field using a controlled drainage monitoring system. The successful candidate will contribute to an environmental and economic modeling team to conduct decision analysis under uncertainty and spatially distributed natural and human factors.


  • Ph.D. degree in Soil Science, Plant Science, Agricultural Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Ecology, Agronomy, or a relevant field of water resources or nutrient system analysis
  • Demonstrated skills in leading field-based, water quality/quantity research, including water and nutrient budgeting and associated equipment maintenance


  • Applicants with experiences in plant/soil relations modeling, ecosystem modeling, and/or biogeochemical modeling are encouraged to apply

Funding is available to start in January, 2019 for appointment on an annual basis with the potential for annual renewal for two or more years based on funding, progress, and satisfactory performance.  This position includes a competitive salary and full benefits.
