Assistant/Associate Professor position in Geomicrobiology

Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences

University of Waterloo

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) in the Faculty of Science at the University of Waterloo invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank in the area of Geomicrobiology. The regular salary ranges for Assistant and Associate Professors at the University of Waterloo are $80K-$100k and $100K-128K, respectively. Negotiations beyond these salary ranges will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates. The start date for the appointment can be as early as January 1, 2019.

Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant field and a strong track record of scientific achievements, as demonstrated by publications in leading journals and a proven aptitude for interdisciplinary research.  The successful candidate will be expected to establish an internationally recognized, and independently funded, research program that will enhance and complement the research and education activities of EES. Applicants should have excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. The University of Waterloo particularly values faculty members who implement innovative learning methods and actively participate in curriculum development.

EES is a research-intensive department with internationally recognized strengths in ecohydrology, environmental (bio)geochemistry, contaminant hydro(geo)logy, biosphere-geosphere evolution, natural resource exploration and development, and engineering geology. With 25 regular faculty members and about 100 postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, EES is one of the largest and most productive Earth Sciences department in Canada. The successful candidate will develop strong research synergies within EES and take full advantage of the extensive collaborative opportunities supported by the interdisciplinary Water Institute (WI) and the recently formed Waterloo Centre for Microbiological Research (WCMR).

We are particularly interested in candidates who conduct experimental and theoretical studies that advance the predictive understanding of the interactions between microorganisms, environmental fluids and earth materials in natural and engineered environments. Possible areas of expertise include, but are not restricted to, mineral-microbe interactions, contaminant geomicrobiology, carbon and nutrient cycling, and modeling of microbially-driven reaction systems.

Applications must be received by October 1, 2018. Interested applicants should submit a complete curriculum vitae, a research vision statement and a teaching vision statement. Each of the vision statements should be no more than two pages in length. A cover letter should identify the names and full contact information of at least three references. The entire application package should be submitted as a single PDF file to klalbrec@uwaterloo.ca. Informal inquiries can be directed to the department’s Chair at drudolph@uwaterloo.ca.
