Sediment Transport Postdoctoral Fellowships

Two new postdoctoral opportunities are available through the National Research Council Research Associateship Program (http://sites.nationalacademies.org/pga/rap/) to participate in on-going research activities at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) at Stennis Space Center, Mississippi (~45 miles east of New Orleans, LA). An NRC postdoctoral fellowship is granted as a one-year award that is renewable for up to three years. Applicants must be US Citizens or US Permanent Residents. More information about NRL’s postdoctoral programs can be found here: https://www.nrl.navy.mil/careers/post-doc/. NRL is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Applicants must prepare a complete proposal that aligns with one of the two NRL projects listed below. While unsolicited proposals will be accepted, we encourage potential applicants to engage with the principal investigator prior to submitting a full research proposal.

Field Observations of Aeolian Sand Transport

Principal Investigator: Dr. Christy Swann

NRL has designed and built a field-deployable Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system capable of obtaining unobtrusive, high-resolution observations of three-dimensional wind velocity, two-dimensional sediment velocity, and the onset, mode, and magnitude of aeolian transport. The observations will be used to investigate the behavior of turbulence and sand transport over a range of transport conditions.  Applicants with experience conducting laboratory and field experiments, performing time series and frequency analysis, and resolving subaerial boundary layer processes are strongly encouraged to apply.  Prior to writing a full proposal, qualified applicants should submit a CV, proposal abstract, academic transcripts, and list of at least 3 references by email to Dr. Christy Swann (Christy.Swann@nrlssc.navy.mil) with the subject line “Field-PIV Postdoctoral Fellowship” by September 1, 2018.

Probabilistic Modeling of Turbulent Sediment Resuspension

Principal Investigator: Dr. Meg Palmsten

NRL is developing a new model for sediment resuspension that bridges the gap between the fundamental scale physics and practical applications of resuspension equations in morphologic models. Our approach is to 1) incorporate the best parameterization of the physical processes at the highest practical resolution and 2) incorporate fundamental scale understanding of resuspension by formulating the larger scale resuspension model as a probabilistic model. Applicants with experience developing high-resolution numerical or probabilistic models of sediment resuspension and conducting analysis of wave-driven sediment resuspension data are strongly encouraged to apply. Prior to writing a full proposal, qualified applicants should submit a CV, proposal abstract, academic transcripts, and list of at least 3 references by email to Dr. Meg Palmsten (Meg.Palmsten@nrlssc.navy.mil) with the subject line “Sediment Resuspension Postdoctoral Fellowship” by September 1, 2018.
