The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist position in cryospheric sciences.

Researchers at Lamont work to understand the dynamics of the Earth’s chemical, physical and biological systems, from the core to the upper atmosphere, including Earth¹s interactions with human society. Our scientists lead research in the fields of solid Earth dynamics; ocean, atmospheric and climate systems; cryospheric sciences; paleoclimate and biogeoscience.

Main responsibilities:

To develop a program of research focusing on using existing ice-penetrating radar datasets and physics-based mathematical modelling to understand the past and present flow of ice sheets. Available data include ground-based and airborne ice-penetrating radar data from East Antarctica aimed at understanding the deepest layers. These data have been collected by researchers at Lamont-Doherty, the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS), and NASA Operation Ice Bridge. The successful applicant will be encouraged to develop research ideas aimed at analyzing these data with the aid of mathematical techniques, including modelling of ice flow and radar-wave propagation.

Candidates should have have completed or be nearing completion of a PhD in Glaciology, Geography, Earth Sciences, Geophysics, Applied Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline. Excellent programming and mathematical skills are preferred. Some experience analyzing and interpreting ice-penetrating radar a plus. Evidence of the ability to conduct and publish high quality research highly desired.

Proposed start date is January 1, 2019, with some flexibility.

Appointment will be for 1-year, with continuation pending funding and progress.

Review of applicants will begin on 15 September, 2018 and will continue until the position is filled.
