A number of assistantships for PhD and MSc students are available in Dr. Scott Hansen’s group in the Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research, part of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel.  Research in the group centers on inverse problems, random walk methods, quantification of uncertainty due to unresolved heterogeneity, and use of machine learning for predictive modelling and upscaling. MSc and PhD students who are skilled in applied mathematics and computer programming are sought for a number of potentially high-impact projects.

Work in the group is interdisciplinary, so a variety of student backgrounds may provide good preparation, including physics, mathematics, engineering, and geosciences. Regardless of background, strong quantitative skills (whether acquired formally or independently) and excellent problem-solving abilities are musts. The ability to express ideas clearly in spoken a  and written English is similarly important.

Graduate student assistants will receive a stipend, full tuition waiver, and subsidized housing on campus, adjacent to the picturesque Zin Valley. Other benefits include a collaborative, one-on-one working environment and a lab featuring exclusive-use high-performance computing equipment that includes a 64-core AMD EPYC compute server and high-end CUDA GPGPU capabilities.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to consult Dr. Hansen’s website (http://scottkhansen.info) for more detail about his current projects and to email him (skh@bgu.ac.il) with a CV and a description of background and research interests. Applicants must also meet university admission requirements. PhD applicants will need to submit complete applications to the Kreitman School (http://in.bgu.ac.il/en/kreitman_school/Pages/admission.aspx) and MSc applicants to the Albert Katz International School (http://in.bgu.ac.il/en/akis/Pages/Admission.aspx).
