Director of the Environmental Science Program
The Department of Geological Sciences and the Environmental Sciences Program invites applications for a new tenure-track role, Director of the Environmental Science Program and Associate Professor in Geochemistry. The Department seeks to enhance its areas of expertise by adding a faculty member with a focus in applications of geochemistry to understand earth systems, earth system processes, climate, petrology, water quality/quantity and/or environmental issues.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a high capacity for developing and maintaining an externally-funded research program in their area of excellence, advise undergraduate research, supervise graduate students, possess a desire to deliver high-quality and innovative teaching and a willingness to engage in the shared governance model at all levels. The candidate will work closely with the Department Chair to advance all aspects of the Environmental Science Program including course development, curricular revisions, student advising, and promotion of the program. In addition to directing the program, the candidate will be expected to develop and teach courses for the department related to the Environmental and Geological Sciences at the undergraduate and graduate level, potentially including courses such as Applications of Geochemistry, Environmental Geochemistry, Introduction to Environmental Systems, A Systems Approach to the Environment, and courses within their discipline.
The successful applicant will demonstrate a trajectory of research and teaching appropriate for the level of an early career associate professor, including an established publication record, demonstrated capacity for securing external funding and teaching experience. A PhD in Geology or related field is required for the position. Demonstrated success in research, teaching and service/outreach at a level appropriate for the rank of Associate Professor is required. About the Department
The San Diego State University Department of Geological Sciences is composed of two programs, the Geological Sciences Program (GSP) and the Environmental Science Program (ESP). The GSP is the fifth oldest program in California and has solid traditions in excellence in education and research. The GSP faculty is composed of individuals who teach and conduct research related to theoretical seismology, neotectonics, marine/coastal geology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, Quaternary geology, deep earth
geophysics, near surface geophysics, hydrology, geochemistry and structural geology. The ESP program was added to the Department in Fall 2017 and has growing interdisciplinary expertise in aspects of earth systems, water, climate and coupled human-earth interactions. The Department has a small, but vibrant community of undergraduate students (~85 GSP & ~130 ESP majors), approximately 20 Geology MS students and 10 PhD students in the Joint Doctoral Program in Geophysics with Scripps Institute of Oceanography at UCSD.
The ESP is an interdisciplinary program that is focused on a systems approach to environmental science. Core courses are offered through the Department of Geological Sciences and students are free to specialize their approach by drawing on courses offered throughout the University that support one or more of the key systems, including: 1) Water, 2) Earth, 3) Climate, 4) Anthropogenically Altered and 5) Systems Analysis. The curriculum is currently undergoing revision and new courses as well as systems tracks will be added based on the focus and input of the candidate.
