DESCRIPTION: Humboldt State University invites applicants for the position of Dean of the College of Natural Resources & Sciences (CNRS). The University seeks a dynamic individual who will provide leadership, vision, and the ability to effectively engage faculty, staff, students, and external constituencies. The Dean is expected to lead and advocate for the College while working collaboratively with the administration, faculty, staff, and students. Successful candidates will demonstrate commitment to providing a high quality, culturally inclusive, and equitable learning environment for a diverse student body; a commitment to facilitating grants and philanthropic contributions in support of teaching, advising, research, and scholarly activities; and a commitment to strategic and fiscal actions to ensure that the College can fulfill its mission. CNRS is a unique college, with an exceptional range of natural resources and science programs and a robust research portfolio that consistently garners sizable external funding. The College has been nationally recognized for creating an innovative first-year experience for incoming students through place-based learning communities.
RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS: The salary for this position lies within the Administrative IV range, and comes with an excellent benefits package. The position is covered by the CSU Management Personnel Plan (MPP). Under this plan, the incumbent is subject to normal management reviews and serves at the pleasure of the University President. Minimum qualifications include:
• An earned doctorate or comparable terminal degree in a STEM or Natural Resources discipline, and credentials appropriate for a tenured appointment at the rank of professor within the College of Natural Resources & Sciences;
• At least three years of successful academic administrative experience at or above the program or department chair level, including strategic planning, managing complex budgets and personnel supervision;
• Evidence of a strong commitment to equitable teaching and scholarship in STEM disciplines;
• Evidence of a commitment to shared governance and the ability to work transparently, collaboratively, and effectively with other administrators, students, faculty, and staff;
• Evidence of capacity-building through faculty and staff recruitment, fundraising efforts, and strategic budget allocations;
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to resolve conflicts effectively and work within a collective bargaining framework including the California Faculty Association (CFA) and the California State University Employees Union (CSUEU).
Strongest candidates will have a record demonstrating:
• A fundamental understanding of public university funding structures, enrollment management, and strategic budgeting;
• A proven record of building partnerships and nurturing relationships that generate extramural support for the mission and vision of the College and the University, including philanthropic support and grant- or contract-based support;
• Success in strategic planning, budget responsibility, and management of physical and human resources including faculty, staff, and facilities;
• Success in efforts to recruit and retain a diverse population of students, staff, and faculty;
• Success in contributing to university-wide accreditation, curriculum review, and development;
• Evidence of support for faculty research as well as student research experiences and experiential learning opportunities;
• Evidence of successful communication and collaboration with the typical divisions found in university structures, and local and regional businesses, industry, government agencies, and tribal nations;
• Evidence of supporting and strengthening Masters-level graduate programs.

Responsibilities of the Dean:
The Dean is the chief academic officer and advocate for the College and reports directly to the Provost. The Dean provides academic, administrative, and fiscal leadership for the College. The Dean will build on and implement a burgeoning strategic plan consistent with the College’s statement of Mission, Vision, and Values, and the University’s Strategic Plan. Duties and responsibilities include:
• Personnel Management (e.g. attract and retain excellent and diverse faculty and staff; support faculty development and teaching excellence; review faculty and staff for retention and promotion);
• Academic and Curricular Planning (e.g. support curriculum and program development; participate in campus-wide planning, policy design, and implementation; provide leadership in assessment);
• Resource Management (e.g. administer financial, staffing and physical resources, including those for instruction and research);
• Advancement (e.g. develop and promote community and university relations; facilitate external funding and grants);
• Enrollment Management (e.g. support student recruitment and retention; actively engage faculty and staff in identifying best practices; analyze and develop strategies to diversify campus).
The College of Natural Resources and Sciences is one of three colleges within Humboldt State University, with approximately 130 faculty and 40% (approximately 3,300 members) of the student population. CNRS is the largest science college per capita on any CSU campus and it offers a unique mix of majors: Botany, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Science and Management, Environmental Resources Engineering, Forestry & Wildland Resources, Fisheries, Geology, Mathematics, Oceanography, Physics, Wildlife, and Zoology. HSU is located on the remote Northern California Pacific coast, in redwood forests.
Because of the University’s geographic location, CNRS programs are able to take advantage of many hands-on opportunities to study local watersheds, fisheries, geology and the ecology of the diverse regional habitats. Thanks to these programs, HSU enjoys a strong national reputation, particularly in the natural and life sciences. According to 2017 data from the National Science Foundation, HSU is ranked 8th nationally out of 660 Masters’ granting institutions to produce science PhDs. Among the 23 CSU campuses, HSU ranks first in this category. CNRS programs provide training for some unique career opportunities, such as “rangeland management specialists”, and offer extensive student career preparation through a variety of departmental initiatives and collaborations with the Academic Career and Advising Center.
CNRS faculty bring large amounts of external funding to HSU to support research activities. The research infrastructure in the College also includes unique resources such as the CNRS Core Research Facility, the marine vessel “Coral Sea”, the Telonicher Marine Lab, the Schatz Energy Research Center, and numerous other programs and institutes. CNRS faculty have won awards to implement an ambitious and innovative first year experience for incoming STEM students. The place-based learning communities for new students aim to improve student retention and graduation rates through fostering a sense of place and a sense of belonging to the University community. By 2020, all incoming CNRS students will have access to a discipline-based first- year learning community.
