The Department of Geography at Kent State University (http://www.kent.edu/geography) invites applications for two available open-rank tenure-track positions starting in August 2019, specializing in (1) Environmental Remote Sensing and (2) Environmental GIS.  For both positions, we are particularly interested in candidates with a focus on human-environment interactions. The successful candidates will hold a PhD in Geography or related field, and demonstrate a strong record of research, and a commitment to work with diverse populations.  Our future colleagues are expected to maintain a strong, externally funded research program, teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and supervise graduate students.

The Department of Geography at Kent State University has traditionally offered BA, MA, and PhD degrees in Geography, and within the last two years has expanded its offerings to house an interdisciplinary BA in Environmental Studies, along with a fully online Master of GIS.  We are 16 full-time faculty, and over 100 graduate students and 100 undergraduate majors.  The department’s mission is to provide an inspirational environment for the pursuit of geographic knowledge. Our faculty research seeks to promote positive social and environmental change, with a focus on interdisciplinary applications and collaboration.  We work at the intersection of global and local: while our research sites span five continents, we also work locally to apply our geographic knowledge to problem-solving at the community level.

The successful applicant will be able to contribute to and benefit from Kent State’s Environmental Science and Design Research Initiative (ESDRI), which includes recent hires in Geography, Geology, and Biological Sciences.  ESDRI represents a university-wide investment in research and innovation within the geological, biological, human, and social systems that promote well-being, sustain diversity of life on Earth, and impact availability of environmental resources.  ESDRI participants include faculty from nine colleges, providing excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Kent State University is ranked among the top 100 national public universities in the nation, and has a strong research mission, dedicated to faculty and student success.  It has been named as a “Great College to Work For” by the Chronicle of Higher Education 8 times, and was one of only 7 schools nationwide to receive the 2018 Healthy Campus Award.  Nestled in the Cuyahoga Valley in northeastern Ohio, Kent State is 40 miles from Cleveland, 12 miles from Akron, and 10 miles from Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

To apply for these positions, applicants should send their current CV, a statement discussing their 5-year research goals, and the contact information for three references to geography@kent.edu.   For more information, please contact Dr. James Tyner (jtyner@kent.edu), search chair for position 1, and Dr. Andrew Curtis (acurti13@kent.edu), search chair for position 2.  Review of applications will begin November 9, 2018, and continue until positions are filled.

Kent State University is an AA/EOO Employer and encourages applications from candidates who would enhance the diversity of the University’s faculty.
