The School of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma (OU) is seeking an outstanding individual to serve as Williams Chair in Meteorology. The Chair is expected to play a leadership role in advancing research focused on the linkages between weather and climate at sub-seasonal to longer time-scales. The position is available on August 15, 2019. The new Williams Chair will be appointed in the School as a tenured faculty member with the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The Williams Chair provides salary support, as well as discretionary funds to support the Chair’s research activities.

The School is internationally recognized for innovative, state-of-the-art education and research in the Atmospheric Sciences. It is one of the leading programs nationwide in developing forward-looking curricula to prepare undergraduate and graduate students for careers in the 21st Century. The School is an academic program in the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences and is located in the National Weather Center on the University’s 271-acre Research Campus. The Campus brings together university programs with State and Federal research and operational facilities, including several NOAA organizations and several private-sector companies. This provides for a dynamic meteorological community, where learning extends beyond the classroom, and research is linked directly to practical applications. In addition to its core research strengths in mesoscale and radar meteorology, the School also offers a diverse research portfolio with expertise in data assimilation, numerical weather and climate prediction, subseasonal to seasonal prediction, polar meteorology, boundary-layer and land-surface processes, tropospheric - stratospheric exchange, and remote sensing of atmospheric constituents. Further faculty expansion and diversification is envisioned to continue for the foreseeable future.

The successful applicant must be an internationally recognized scientist with a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences or related field. The Williams Chair is expected to carry out a vigorous program of teaching, research, and service that attracts exceptional students and scientists, and prepares them to become future leaders in the atmospheric sciences. Clearly demonstrated scholarly attainment, primarily but not exclusively through teaching, research, and scholarly activity, is expected. The ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of leaders within the region, nationally, and internationally is also desirable.
