Assistant Laboratory Manager
The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) Appalachian Laboratory has an opening for a Faculty Research Assistant to serve as Assistant Lab Manager in the Water Chemistry Laboratory. Job responsibilities will include sample preparation and analysis of environmental samples using state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation to support a variety of research projects and contractual laboratory services to clients. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to coordinate the day-to-day operation of the laboratory in cooperation with the Laboratory Manager and faculty, including supervision of laboratory technicians, ensuring & monitoring quality assurance and quality control of the data, interacting with clients, and troubleshooting laboratory instrumentation. Candidate will also be expected to contribute to research proposals, technical reports, and scientific publications.
This is a full-time salaried position offered as a one-year renewable contract contingent on funding. Appointee will be eligible to receive full university benefits, including medical, prescription drug, dental, and retirement. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental chemistry, or related field and one-year of professional experience analyzing environmental samples are required.
Preferred Qualifications: Applicants with additional environmental analytical laboratory experience will be afforded additional consideration. The preferred candidate will have extensive experience both performing and troubleshooting a wide array of analytical techniques, which can include but is not limited to: wet chemistry techniques, ion chromatography, flow injection colorimetry, elemental analysis, atomic absorption spectrometry, and inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Candidates familiar with NELAP (or comparable organization) accreditation requirements will also be afforded additional consideration. Candidates with literacy in environmental issues related to water quality are also preferred.
