Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Research Positions in Physical Oceanography

The Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography (HCNSO) at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) is extending its research and inviting a graduate student and a postdoctoral researcher to join us.

The HCNSO Oceanographic Center is located near the mouth of Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. It features a large marina with a fleet of small research vessels, allowing easy access to coastal and open ocean environments. This state-of-art 86,000 square foot research facility includes the Physical Oceanography (PO) Lab (https://cnso.nova.edu/physics/index.html). The PO Lab is currently involved in a Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative consortium (CARTHE), a Madden-Julian Oscillation study in the Indian Ocean (NOAA), and a project in the Straits of Florida (ONR). The PO Lab is also involved in hurricane research and is interested in developing future geoengineering projects to produce substantial societal benefits while minimizing adverse effects.

Graduate Student (Ph.D.):

The student will help with field work (e.g., participating in short cruises or piloting gliders), data analysis, computer modeling, and light administrative work. Knowledge of or willingness to learn Matlab, C language, computation fluid dynamics, or similar software is a plus. Projects at the PO Lab involve math, physics, and biophysics. The student background should include Calculus II and Physics II, or above.  We are looking for a student with GRE scores around or above 60%. The student will be employed as a Research Associate with competitive benefits including a tuition waiver. Participation in the scientific component of projects will provide a basis for his/her dissertation work. The students working at the PO Lab typically report their results at major national and international science conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.

Postdoctoral Researcher:

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in oceanography, fluid mechanics, or a closely related field. Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include one or more of the following areas: computation fluid dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, turbulence, satellite oceanography. Programming skills in algorithmic languages (C and Matlab) and familiarity with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques are a plus. Research should result in conference presentations and publications. This position is initially awarded for one year with an extension to three years depending on the researcher progress. The appointment can begin as early as January 1, 2019. NSU offers a salary starting at $85,000/year and a competitive benefits package.
