Research Associate position in geomechanics of induced earthquakes

Description: The Research Associate will build a sustained research program in reservoir geomechanics with emphasis on the geomechanics of induced seismicity. Initial research objectives include devising and executing numerical geomechanical simulations of the coupled flow and poroelastic response to subsurface fluid injection and production, and Coulomb failure stress analyses of faults. The position will closely interact with and report to Dr. Peter Eichhubl (BEG, http://www.beg.utexas.edu/eichhubl/index.htm ) and Dr. Peter Hennings (http://www.beg.utexas.edu/people/peter-hennings), in collaboration with members of the TexNet-CISR team at UT Austin (http://www.beg.utexas.edu/cisr).

Desired qualifications: 1-2 years of postdoctoral experience in an academic research environment. Experience working with geomechanical and subsurface geological data sets.

Minimum qualifications: PhD in geosciences, geophysics, petroleum engineering, or a relevant discipline with research focus on geomechanics. Experience in computational deformation modeling in reservoir or fault geomechanics and poromechanics or reservoir engineering. The candidate must have experience working with complex geologic data and models. Candidate must possess a published record of successful collaborative research, the willingness to work as part of an integrated team of geologists and engineers, be able to work toward project deadlines, and have a willingness to work with industry scientists to apply techniques and research results. The candidate must have an established record as lead author of scientific publications in international journals and demonstrated fluency in spoken and written English. The successful applicant will be expected to present at meetings with sponsors, present at conferences, publish in international journals, mentor graduate students and postdocs, and substantially contribute to external fund raising.

The position is available immediately subject to budget approval, with the expectation of continued appointment based on satisfactory progress and availability of funds. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers at the Bureau of Economic Geology and the Cockrell School of Engineering. UT offers competitive salary and benefits, a collaborative research environment, and the facilities of a large research university including the Texas Advanced Computing Center https://www.tacc.utexas.edu/.

To Apply: Applicants must submit their applications materials, including a letter of interest, CV with a complete record of publications including links to articles, statement of professional goals with an emphasis on research objectives, and names and addresses of four professional references (at least three academic) as a single pdf file to Dr. Peter Eichhubl, peter.eichhubl@beg.utexas.edu, who will also be available at the AGU meeting in Washington DC to informally meet with prospective candidates. Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled. The University of Texas at Austin is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
