Assistant/Associate Professor, Agricultural Hydrology and Water Quality (50% Research, 35% Extension, 15% Teaching)

Location: School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR), College of Food, Agricultural & Environmental Sciences (CFAES), The Ohio State University – OARDC Wooster Campus.

Position Description:

  • The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally recognized research program with an emphasis on hydrology and water quality in agricultural landscapes. Ideally, this scientist will utilize field observations and monitoring approaches, possibly combined with remotely sensed data, to understand vadose zone hydrological processes and hydrologic controls of water quality outcomes at the farm field to watershed scale. Specialties of particular interest include: (a) vadose zone hydrologic processes in agricultural fields and watersheds; (b) impacts of land use changes and farm management strategies (e.g., tillage, crop rotations, riparian buffers, controlled drainage, ditch design, etc.) on water flows and water quality; and (c) the ability to link physical hydrology to water quality and ecosystem function in ways that enhance management of water resources and agroecosystems in Ohio and the region.
  • The incumbent will become an integral component of SENR’s Environmental Science group (aquatic sciences, soil science, and ecosystem restoration) as well as a growing team of OSU faculty working on collaborative research and outreach related to complex socio-environmental issues in working landscapes.
  • Based on The Ohio State University’s Wooster Campus as part of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC), the incumbent will be expected to contribute to the SENR’s research, extension, teaching and advising programs. The successful candidate should complement current strengths in environmental sciences as well as be able to cross traditional disciplinary boundaries. S/he will be expected to develop an externally funded research program, support and integrate with appropriate OSU extension colleagues, attract outstanding graduate students, and be committed to undergraduate education. Specific expectations and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop an independent research and extension program related to the hydrology of agricultural landscapes with appropriate interdisciplinary alliances that includes a strong graduate-student program.
  • Secure extramural funding and publish in refereed journals. The development of an interdisciplinary research program will be essential.
  • Work collaboratively with other OSU extension educators, University faculty/personnel, government agencies, non-government organizations, and citizen groups to advance the land grant mission of the University.
  • Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in area of expertise as well as within the Environmental Science curriculum.
  • Advise undergraduate students, including honors students.
  • Serve the School, University and professional communities through appropriate activities


  • Earned Ph.D. with a strong academic background in hydrologic science.
  • Expertise conducting applied research on hydrologic controls on water quality in agricultural landscapes with a focus on vadose zone processes.
  • Evidence of productivity and excellence in research, outreach education, and teaching – or evidence of potential – are required. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills and a willingness and ability to work closely with other people.
  • Preferred qualifications include experience integrating research, teaching, and outreach programs; experience or demonstrated interest in working with social scientists and interdisciplinary research teams; familiarity with land-grant extension systems; and experience in or well-articulated goals for student mentorship, including support for members of historically underrepresented groups.
  • Postdoctoral experience or previous involvement with state and federal agencies within the US or internationally are strongly encouraged.


  • Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience.
