Assistant Professor: Coastal Dynamics and Records of Sea-Level Change

About the Position:

The preferred candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a vigorous teaching and research program that complements existing strengths in sedimentology, geomorphology, stable-isotope geochemistry, and geophysics in the Geology Department, and existing strengths in marine biology, marine ecology, estuarine science, energy studies, chemical oceanography, and toxicology in the other MCS-affiliated departments and institutes.  We seek scholars who are seriously committed to teaching undergraduate courses in general oceanography and marine geology, upper-division courses in marine geology, and specialty courses spanning introductory to graduate-level in their field of expertise in the Geology Department.  The teaching assignments for this position will be distributed evenly between courses offered in Geology and courses offered in MCS.  This faculty member will also be expected to participate in service to the department, the program, and the college as well as student advising.

The MCS program brings together faculty, staff and students from three academic departments and affiliated programs housed in two colleges, in addition to a WWU-operated marine laboratory - the Shannon Point Marine Center.  Each department associated with the MCS program places strong emphasis on performing innovative research including meaningful research opportunities for its students.  Members of the departments are also active in the development of new educational materials and innovative teaching methods.  The Shannon Point Marine Center supports student and faculty research and is an important facility for WWU's undergraduate and graduate programs in the marine sciences through classroom, laboratory and field resources.

About the College/Department:

We invite applicants for a tenure-track position in Coastal Dynamics and Records of Sea-Level Change.  This position, at the rank of assistant professor and starting on September 16, 2019, will be a joint appointment in the Geology Department and the new program in Marine and Coastal Sciences (MCS) at Western Washington University, and will provide the successful candidate with an exciting opportunity to help develop new curricular and research programs with participating faculty affiliated with the Shannon Point Marine Center, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Geology Departments at WWU.

We seek applicants whose research and teaching focuses on geological processes that interact with coastal dynamics and sea level change in the coastal ocean environment.  The preferred candidate will be able to combine field-based quantitative analytical or modelling techniques to advance our knowledge and understanding of erosional, depositional and post-depositional processes in modern and ancient coastal environments, and how these processes respond to sea level changes due to climate and/or tectonic forcing. As one of the initial faculty hires into the MCS program, the successful applicant will also be expected to support collaborations within and between the MCS program and the Geology department.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Geological/Earth Science, Oceanography, or closely related field by the time of appointment
  • Commitment to establishing a vigorous research program in coastal dynamics involving undergraduate students
  • Ability to establish an externally-supported research program
  • Potential for effective classroom teaching in introductory oceanography/marine geology, and upper division courses in both Geology and the Marine Science program
  • Ability and commitment to working effectively with a diverse student body, including cultivating learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Post-doctoral research (or equivalent) experience in coastal dynamics
  • Research specialization that complements existing research programs in Geology and participating MCS units, and that includes interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Experience teaching undergraduate STEM courses
  • Experience using and developing student-centered teaching methods
  • Potential for mentoring students in graduate research as part of the Geology M.S. program
