The Division of Marine Science within the School of Ocean Science and Engineering at the University of Southern Mississippi invites applicants for M.S. or Ph.D. studies in Marine Science and Hydrographic Science, starting in fall 2019. We seek skilled and motivated individuals for exciting opportunities in Physical, Biological and Geological Oceanography, Marine Chemistry, Hydrographic Scienceand Ocean Engineering. Prospective students with undergraduate/graduate degrees in Oceanography, Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Earth Science, Chemistry, Computer Science or a related field are especially encouraged to apply. Our faculty’s research interests span a wide range of oceanographic topics, including but not limited to: climate variability; coastal hazards and sea level rise; coastal hypoxia and its ecological and biogeochemical impacts; circulation in coastal seas and oceans; ocean-atmosphere interactions; hydrodynamic, atmospheric and ecosystem modeling; remote sensing, marine instrumentation and autonomous vehicles;observing marine organisms and particles; and seafloor mapping. Southern Miss is an R1 Carnegie Research University – Highest Research Activity, and has been designated as Mississippi’s flagship university for marine science. The Division of Marine Science is located at the John C. Stennis Space Center on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. Stennis is a “federal city” that boasts the world’s largest concentration of oceanographers and hydrographers, housing offices for scientists associated with NASA, the U.S. Navy, NOAA, and USGS. Stennis is also in close proximity to the Port of Gulfport, where USM’s R/V Point Sur and new Marine Research Center are located.
