Job Details
Summary
The Atmospheric Science Branch in the Earth Science Division is seeking a senior scientist to lead a research team investigating Earth's atmospheric composition, with emphasis on aerosol-cloud-radiation studies. The team develops and deploys scientific instruments to gather data and publish results that improve our understanding of the climate system. The senior scientist also cultivates new science objectives that drive formulation of future field campaigns to further scientific knowledge.
Responsibilities
- Leads studies of atmospheric aerosol particles and the coupling between radiation, chemistry, and dynamics that affect climate. Leads development of techniques that validate, complement, or extend remote measurements from space.
- Conceives field campaigns and develops proposals in response to science-driven hypotheses that address NASA focus areas. Acts as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator in conceiving and advocating for the investigation.
- Leads a team of physical scientists and engineers in defining the research direction and design and development of novel airborne sunphotometer systems, including managing construction, testing, and evaluation of flight instrumentation.
- Guides and participates in all phases of fieldwork/research and data analysis. Interprets results in context of other measurements and theories. Publishes research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presents at professional conferences.
- Serves as scientific/technical lead for NASA's Decadal Survey observing systems and development of space-based instruments. Helps define algorithms used to retrieve data and leads efforts to validate data via correlative measurements/interpretations.
- Conceives and leads NASA's Earth Venture-class investigations focusing on airborne observations and synergies with remote sensing observations that examine aerosol-cloud-radiation processes and their impact on climate.
- Keeps abreast with current knowledge and understanding of atmospheric problems. Engages the community through peer-reviewed literature, scientific meetings, and regular exchange with colleagues including the Decadal Survey observing system teams.
Travel is Required.
