The University of New Hampshire (UNH) School of Marine Science and Ocean Engineering (SMSOE) of the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space (EOS) invites applications at all ranks (Assistant to Full Research Professor) in the broad area of Marine Science.  The successful applicant can expect to interact with faculty from the life sciences, ocean engineering, earth sciences, and oceanography as well as the social sciences and humanities to address critical coastal and marine science problems in new and coordinated ways.  The successful candidate will have a strong track record of demonstrating outstanding independent research and the ability to raise his/her salary from external grants, be a proven programmatic and organizational leader, and a distinguished scientist with international connections and diverse perspectives. While primarily a research appointment, graduate level teaching and research interaction with diverse students is encouraged.

There is also the opportunity to serve as Director of the Jackson Estuarine Laboratory (JEL) for interested and qualified applicants.  Scientists conduct experimental and field-based research at JEL, which is located on the shores of Great Bay Estuary and dedicated to the study of marine and estuarine processes. Applicants with a vision for JEL and a demonstrated ability of leadership can be considered for this role. The JEL Director is expected to have an applied understanding of Marine Laboratory operations, policies and procedures, strategic planning, and proven track record for developing multidisciplinary research proposals, and a demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive research agenda and environment.

The SMSOE was created at UNH to break down traditional disciplinary barriers and enhance and facilitate interdisciplinary research and teaching and to build on a long history of excellence in marine science and ocean engineering at UNH.  The SMSOE operates two research vessels and numerous smaller boats, three laboratory facilities: 1) Jackson Estuarine Laboratory on Great Bay, 2) Judd Gregg Marine Research Complex at the mouth of the Piscataqua River in Portsmouth, and 3) Chase Ocean Engineering Laboratory on the UNH campus in Durham. The SMSOE is also home to the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center (NOAA), NH Sea Grant, the Piscataqua Regional Estuaries Program, and the Shoals Marine Laboratory located on Appledore Island in the Gulf of Maine.

The University actively creates and nurtures a dynamic learning environment in which qualified individuals of differing perspectives, life experiences, and cultural backgrounds pursue academic goals with a mutual respect and shared spirit of inquiry.

The University of New Hampshire is an Equal Opportunity/Equal Access/Affirmative Action institution. The University seeks excellence through diversity among its administrators, faculty, staff, and students. The university prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, veteran status, or marital status. Application by members of all underrepresented groups is encouraged.

The application package should include a cover letter, detailed curriculum vitae, documents stating specific research plans (2-page maximum), and the names of at least three references. The target date for applications is March 15, 2019, but the search will remain open until the position is filled. Consideration of applications will begin immediately.
