Job Summary:

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) in Boulder, Colorado is seeking two (2) research scientists to work at the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) with its Physical Sciences Division (PSD) Attribution and Predictability Assessments team. This team has a strong history in quantifying weather and climate predictability and in developing science-based attributions to the causes of high-impact events. The team’s research and development (R&D) portfolio is also expanding to help NOAA improve its sub-seasonal to seasonal numerical weather-climate predictions, and we also invite experts on R&D on coupled data assimilation, coupled prediction, and coupled process understanding to apply.    A chosen candidate is expected to become a leader in predictability or prediction at sub-seasonal to seasonal time scales, choosing research questions of particular relevance to NOAA’s mission. A candidate should have excellent communication skills and be very comfortable working in a team environment.   These positions will be located in Boulder, Colorado, with an office at the NOAA Earth System Research Lab (ESRL), Physical Sciences Division (PSD).

Who We Are:

At CIRES, the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, more than 800 environmental scientists work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including people’s relationship with the planet. CIRES is a partnership of NOAA and the University of Colorado Boulder, and our areas of expertise include weather and climate, changes at the Earth’s poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, and solid Earth sciences. Our vision is to be instrumental in ensuring a sustainable future environment by advancing scientific and societal understanding of the Earth system.

Key Responsibilities:

    1. Conduct research relevant to NOAA and ESRL/PSD’s missions involving predictability and sub-seasonal to seasonal prediction system improvement for weather, hydrology, and extreme events.
    2. Work collaboratively with a research team, potentially including operational partners in the National Weather Service.
    3. Effectively convey the research results through reports, peer-reviewed journal articles, and presentations.
    4. Over time, write successful proposals to partially fund their own research activities and those of support scientists.

What You Should Know:

CIRES commits to inclusive excellence by advancing equity and diversity in all that we do. We are an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer, and particularly encourage applications from members of historically underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, women, individuals with disabilities, veterans, LGBTQ community members, and others who demonstrate the ability to help us achieve our vision of a diverse and inclusive community.   Benefits: The University of Colorado offers excellent benefits including medical, dental, retirement (employer contribution is 10%), paid time off, tuition benefit, 6 weeks paid parental leave and ECO Pass. The University of Colorado Boulder is one of the largest employers in Boulder County and offers an inspiring higher education environment.

This position is rostered in the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder, however, the job will be physically located in the NOAA Federal Lab at the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO, 80305.  The applicant must be able to pass a federal security check to access the building.

What We Require:

  • Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science or a related discipline. Ideally, the candidate would have several years of experience past their doctoral degree, but exceptionally qualified recent graduates will be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience with weather-climate prediction systems, geophysical data sets, and applying diagnostics to understand the underlying physical processes.
  • A proven record publishing articles and presenting their research in conferences and seminars.
  • Experience developing structured code in commonly used languages, which might include Fortran90, C, Python, R, and/or UNIX scripting.
  • Fluency in writing and speaking English, and exceptional communication skills.
  • The ability to travel with roughly a frequency of 2-4 trips per year.

To apply, please submit the following materials:

  1. Resume or CV
  2. Cover letter addressed to the Search Committee briefly describing your qualifications, professional goals, and specific interest in this position.
  3. List of contact information for 3 references who will be willing to write a confidential Letter of Recommendation for you.
    • One (1) confidential Letter of Recommendation will be requested if you are short-listed, or the finalist, depending on the selection process. It is important that the referees (from your "list of references") are prepared in advance to expect an email from CU Boulder Campus HR requesting that the letter be uploaded to the link provided in the email. The confidential Letter of Recommendation is mandatory and no offer of employment can be made without it. This will be kept confidential and viewable only by the search committee.

If you are selected as the finalist, your degree will be verified by CU Boulder Campus HR using an approved online vendor. If your degree was obtained outside of the United States, please submit a translated version as an optional attachment.

The position will be open until filled. Applications will be screened as they are received.

Note: Application materials will not be accepted via email. For consideration, applications must be submitted through the link below at the CU Boulder Jobs website
