Physical Oceanography Graduate Assistantship at the University of Southern Mississippi

The Division of Marine Science at the University of Southern Mississippi invites applicants for M.S. or Ph.D. studies in Physical Oceanography starting in fall 2019. We seek a skilled and motivated individual for an exciting opportunity to work on the NSF funded project “Collaborative research: Interactions between Internal Waves, Mesoscale Eddies, and Submesoscale Currents in the California Current System”. This project will contribute to a better understanding of the generation and fate of internal tides, the dissipation of which is relevant for the overturning circulation and global climate. The work involves analyzing regional and global ocean model data sets. There will be opportunities to work with our collaborators at the University of California in Los Angeles, CA, and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. Funding is available for travel to collaborators, science conferences, and summer schools. Strong skills in physics and math are crucial, and experience with data analysis and modeling is beneficial. The project requires working in a Linux environment and programming in Matlab and Fortran.

Southern Miss is a Carnegie Research University and has been designated as Mississippi’s flagship university for marine science. The Division of Marine Science is located at the John C. Stennis Space Center on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. Stennis is a “federal city” that boasts the world’s largest concentration of oceanographers and hydrographers, housing offices for scientists associated with NASA, the U.S. Navy, NOAA, and USGS. Stennis is also in close proximity to the Port of Gulfport, which is the home port for USM’s research vessel Point Sur and where USM has a new Marine Research Center, with a state-of-the-art fabrication lab, testing tank, and laboratory space. DMS graduate assistants are supported with a $40,000 annual resource package, including a tuition waiver and a stipend of $23,400 per academic year with benefits.
