RESEARCH POSITION AT SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY, UCSD

POLAR SCIENCE/REMOTE HYDROLOGY

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California San Diego (http://scripps.ucsd.edu) invites applications for a full-time Researcher position to be funded by extramural research grants and contracts in any of the research areas listed below. The Researcher series at SIO parallels the Professor series in terms of research and service, but it carries no teaching requirements. Researchers receive nine-month appointments with 25% salary support from institutional sources. Researchers are expected to establish an externally funded research program that provides the remainder of their salary support, including an opportunity for summer salary. Researchers at SIO often obtain lecturer appointments in the SIO department and serve as graduate student advisors.

We seek a motivated, broad-thinking scientist to develop a vigorous research group and provide intellectual leadership in their field, while also taking advantage of SIO’s exceptionally diverse scientific community. We are interested in candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in research and service, and who are committed to building an equitable and diverse university environment. We anticipate hiring at the Assistant Researcher level, but exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for the Associate or Full Researcher levels.

Polar Science: We are seeking outstanding candidates who study Earth’s ice sheets (Greenland and Antarctica) using numerical modelling to determine how much these ice sheets will contribute to sea-level over the coming century. Areas of specialization include, but are not limited to: the dynamics and stability of grounding-lines of marine ice sheets; ocean-induced ice-shelf melting; rifting and calving processes (including hydrofracture); subglacial lake dynamics.

Remote Hydrology:  We seek outstanding candidates who study the hydrosphere using remote sensing methods. Areas of specialization include, but are not limited to: surface deformation and gravity changes linked to water fluxes; coupling between hydrological and solid earth processes; remote sensing and modeling of groundwater changes; and GNSS remote sensing of surface/atmospheric water. Candidates with the interest and potential to participate on science teams for NASA’s relevant earth observation missions are encouraged to apply.

The position requires a PhD, in a relevant field, at time of application and candidates should have a competitive record of publication, as well as evidence of the ability to conduct and fund an active research program consistent with career level. Successful candidates are expected to have some extramural salary support already in hand. Salary will depend on the experience of the successful applicant and will be based on the UCSD pay scales.

For full consideration, please apply by the 4/5/19 deadline at:

SIO is a world-renowned center of marine research with approximately 200 principal investigators leading research programs on all aspects of earth, ocean, biological and atmospheric sciences. We are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body.

UCSD is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer with a strong institutional commitment to excellence and diversity (http://diversity.ucsd.edu).
