We invite applications for a Ph.D. research assistantship available in the Department of Civil Engineering at University of Sherbrooke, Sherbrooke, Province of Quebec, Canada. We are interested in highly motivated students to work on a project devoted to hydrological forecasts and understanding watershed hydrological dynamics using remotely sensed imagery. The project is funded by the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and industrial partners through an industrial research Chair entitled «Valorisation of Earth's observations in Water Resources». More specifically, the project will be addressing the following topic: assimilation of remotely sensed and point snow pack data from multiple sensors in spatially distributed hydrological models to enhance flood forecasts.
Applicants with interest in hydroclimatology, hydrological modelling, data assimilation and remote sensing and with demonstrated academic excellence at the Bachelor and Master's level are encouraged to apply. Experience in using distributed hydrological models, image analysis, data assimilation techniques, and knowledge of programming languages (Python, Matlab) is an asset. The assistantships include a 3-4 year stipend and travel to national/international conferences. Position is available immediately. Foreign PhD students pay tuition fees equivalent to those of Quebec students, which are the lowest in Canada.
University of Sherbrooke is a French speaking University. The faculty of Engineering hosts 3700 students, from which 1600 are attending MSc and PhD programs, and generates more than 40 M$/year of research. The city Sherbrooke is the 6th largest in the province of Quebec with 165000 residents, located in the Eastern Townships within the Appalachian Mountains.
