Two 9-Month Positions in Geological Sciences, Central Washington University

The Department of Geological Sciences, Central Washington University, invites applications for two 9-month, non-tenure track lecturer positions from September 16, 2019 to June 15, 2020. The first position includes teaching Mineralogy and Introductory Petrology; the second includes Sedimentology/Stratigraphy and Historical Geology; either could also include Quantitative Reasoning for Geoscientists or summer teaching of our 5-week Geologic Field Methods course (June 22 to July 27, 2020). Both positions include a selection of introductory geology courses for majors and non-majors. A Master’s Degree in Geological Sciences or closely allied field is required, and university-level teaching experience is preferred. The Department of Geological Sciences at Central Washington University is composed of 11 permanent faculty who maintain diverse research and teaching programs that involve both undergraduate and M.S. students. There are ~75 undergraduate majors and 20 Master’s degree graduate students. We offer a BS and BA in Geology, a BS in Environmental Geological Sciences, a Geology specialization in Environmental Sciences, and an MS in Geological Sciences. Central Washington University, is a regional comprehensive university located on the eastern flanks of the Cascade Mountains in Ellensburg (population ~20,000), which provides one of the finest living environments in the Pacific Northwest.

Position Descriptions

The successful candidates for each position will teach an average of 15 credit hours per quarter (2-3 courses), including a combination of  undergraduate courses in their areas of expertise (see below) and introductory courses for majors and non-majors.

Courses for Mineralogy/Petrology Position:

  • GEOL 320 Rocks and Minerals (Introductory Petrology)
  • GEOL 346 Mineralogy
  • GEOL 101 Introduction to Geology and/or GEOL 107 Earth’s Changing Surface and/or GEOL 108 Earth and Energy Resources

Possible additional courses depending on interest and expertise:

  • GEOL 188 Geology and Environmental Geology Field Trips (non-majors). Weekend field trips to engage and recruit students into Geological Sciences
  • GEOL 305 Quantitative Reasoning for Geoscientists (early majors)

Courses for Sedimentology/Stratigraphy Position:

  • GEOL 370 Sedimentology and Stratigraphy
  • GEOL 200 Earth Evolution and Global Change (Historical Geology)
  • GEOL 101 Introduction to Geology and/or GEOL 107 Earth’s Changing Surface and/or GEOL 108 Earth and Energy Resources

Possible additional courses depending on interest and expertise:

  • GEOL 188 Geology and Environmental Geology Field Trips (non-majors). Weekend field trips to engage and recruit students into Geological Sciences
  • GEOL 305 Quantitative Reasoning for Geoscientists (early majors)

For either position, there is an additional option to teach a 5-week summer course, GEOL 489 Geologic Field Methods, from June 22-July 27, 2020. This optional course would involve additional pay and work schedule during the summer quarter, and would be administered under a separate contract. Contact the CWU Department of Geological Sciences for more information about this course and teaching opportunity.                                                     

Minimum Qualifications for Both Positions

  • Master’s degree in Geological Sciences or related field
  • Demonstrated teaching potential
  • Expertise in either (1) mineralogy and petrology or (2) sedimentology, stratigraphy and historical geology suitable to teaching those courses
  • Evidence of potential to be a dynamic instructor who can engage a diversity of students
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with a multi-cultural population and adherence to the university philosophy supporting diversity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Geological Sciences or related field
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in field of expertise
  • Potential to teach an introductory majors’ course in Quantitative Reasoning for Geoscientists

Pay & Work Schedule

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience, in accordance with the minimum salaries set by the CWU Collective Bargaining Agreement

Appointment: Full-time, non-tenure track, 9 month appointment, Sept 16, 2019 – June 15, 2020.
