Atmospheric Modeling Postdoctoral Scholar - 86559

Organization: CE-Climate & Ecosystems

The Climate & Ecosystem Sciences Division (https://eesa.lbl.gov/our-divisions/climate-ecosystem-sciences/) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) seeks an Atmospheric Modeling Postdoctoral Scholar to advance numerical modeling of interactions between convective clouds, boundary-layer dynamics, and the land-surface. Specific research activities may include evaluating cloud, turbulence, and land-surface parameterizations against observations and cloud-resolving models; developing and testing new methods of coupling cloud-resolving models to high-resolution land-surface models; and developing multi-scale models to capture key behaviors and state-dependencies of the coupled system. The successful candidate will approach these challenges as part of a collaborative team project advancing understanding and modeling of convection and land-atmosphere interactions in the water cycle.

What You Will Do:

• Design, conduct, and publish research that advances numerical modeling of clouds and mesoscale dynamics over heterogeneous terrain.

• Perform complex model experiments to evaluate DOE’s Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) using observations from DOE’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement program (ARM) facilities and AmeriFlux.

• Publish peer-reviewed journal articles, and communicate findings to peers.

• Contribute to reports and communications with program managers that fund this work.

What Is Required:

• Ph.D. within 3 years in Atmospheric Science(Feel free to explain or inquire about eligibility if outside that margin), or a related field with equivalent research experience.

• Experience in numerical modeling and scientific programming.

• Experience/interest in mesoscale/cloud dynamics.

• Established record of publication and presentation.

• Ability to work independently in a collaborative environment.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Required documents in PDF through Berkeley Lab’s jobs portal:

• CV

• One-two page application letter describing research interests and relevant experience

• Contact information for three references and one-two publications

Notes:

• This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

• Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

• This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

• Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

• This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

• Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
