Job Details
This position provides expertise in mass wasting, slope stability, surface erosion, hydrology, experimental design and quantitative research methods to support research conducted by the Cooperative Monitoring, Evaluation and Research Committee for the Washington State Forest Practices Adaptive Management Program. The incumbent will work collaboratively with project teams under guidance of CMER and its scientific advisory groups to: 1) design and implement research and monitoring projects; 2) provide expertise in slope stability, surface erosion, sediment transport, and hydrologic processes; 3) provide technical support in experimental design and quantitative research methods (e.g. statistical analysis, data management/manipulation, modeling, GIS); and 4) develop project implementation plans, budgets and schedules.
Qualifications: Master’s degree in Geology, Hydrology, Geomorphology or closely related field and three years professional work experience in designing and implementing research related to mass wasting, slope stability, surface erosion or hydrologic processes. A PhD degree may substitute for experience, provided the field of major study was related to mass wasting, slope stability, hydrology or erosion processes. A working knowledge of the relationship between forest management and mass wasting, surface erosion and hydrologic/fluvial processes is necessary. Advanced experience in quantitative research methods used to design studies and analyze data (e.g., multivariate statistical analysis), experience with slope stability and hydrologic modeling, and spatial analysis using GIS. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience working collaboratively and communicating effectively with stake-holder groups to achieve consensus in a contentious stake-holder-driven process. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments, perform well under pressure and meet deadlines with a minimum of direct supervision. Experience organizing and directing research projects. Interpersonal and teambuilding skills, ability to work with and for people of different cultures and perspectives.
