Assistant Research Professor of Watershed Management and Water Resources

The Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences seeks a diverse pool of candidates for an Assistant Research Professor of Watershed Management and Water Resources. This is a non-tenure-track, faculty position on a 36-week academic year appointment with 25% research and 75% Extension responsibilities in a fixed-term multi-year (three-year) contract with the opportunity and expectation for continued renewal. The position will be based in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Management. We seek candidates with expertise in hydrology, watershed dynamics, aquatic/riparian ecology, natural resource conservation, or other relevant disciplines in water science. This position will complement the existing, successful Penn State Extension Water Resources team, including county-based educators. Activities will include building collaborative, interdisciplinary networks between Penn State Extension team members working throughout the state and researchers working on water resource issues in the Agriculture and Environment Center and the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, among others. There are opportunities for collaboration with many programs, centers, and institutes across the College and University. The appointee will develop and deliver impactful research and Extension programs. Program foci might include watershed management strategies; conservation practices to improve water quality; design and infrastructure approaches to stormwater management; measures to protect private water supplies; assessment of causes, effects, prevention and restoration of surface water and groundwater impairments; methods to address point and nonpoint source pollution; impacts of land use change; and changes in water quantity or quality associated with water withdrawals or climate variability. The appointee will provide leadership and science-based information to key stakeholders, policy makers, and the public on solutions to water quality and water resource challenges in agriculture and urban communities locally and regionally. Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in watershed management, hydrology, limnology, water sciences, or a related field; a strong publication record and the potential to develop a vigorous extramurally funded research program; and demonstrated excellence in outreach. The successful candidate must have completed all degree requirements by the appointment date. Communication, creative leadership, congeniality, and the ability to work cooperatively among a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, industry and agency groups is essential in our department and university. The Pennsylvania State University is committed to and accountable for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all of its forms. We embrace individual uniqueness, foster a culture of inclusive excellence that supports both broad and specific diversity initiatives, leverage the educational and institutional benefits of diversity, and engage all individuals to help them thrive.
