The Department of Physical Sciences at Concord University invites applications for a non-tenure-track position in Astronomy and Physics beginning August, 2019. The position requires the ability to teach general education astronomy, introductory physics labs, and develop and teach an online general education course in physical science focusing on chemistry and physics for non-majors. Applicants with a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or planetary science with graduate coursework in physics are preferred. Applicants who are ABD may be considered. The appointment is for one year with a possibility for annual renewal dependent upon the needs of the institution and performance of the candidate.

 

Concord University is a public, liberal-arts institution with an enrollment of approximately 2000 students. The University is located in a scenic, small-town setting in the mountains of southern West Virginia with access to year-round outdoor recreation activities. The Department of Physical Sciences includes degree programs in environmental geosciences and chemistry, and a minor in physics. The Department also offers service courses to majors in computer science, biology, and teacher education. The Department values and actively supports innovative teaching and participation in undergraduate research and seeks candidates with similar ideals. The Department maintains a diverse array of instrumentation for teaching and undergraduate research, including an observatory, electron microprobe, micro-XRF, AFM, facilities for analytical chemistry, and geophysical equipment including ground penetrating radar.

The candidate will be an outstanding teacher capable of preparing and teaching courses as listed in the job summary. The position may include an opportunity to teach a lecture section of introductory physics (calculus or trigonometry based) or an upper-level physics or related course appropriate for majors in environmental geosciences, chemistry, computer science, and/or biology. The ability to contribute to our newly revised computer science program is particularly welcome but not required. The candidate must be a clear communicator and demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching. He/she will participate in campus service including departmental activities, public outreach, laboratory oversight, and equipment maintenance including supervision of the Concord University Observatory. The candidate will teach 12 contact hours per semester.

 

The minimum degree is a Master's but a Doctorate is preferred; ABD candidates who hold an M.S. degree may be considered. Candidates should have appropriate graduate coursework in astronomy and physics.  

 

Minimum of two years teaching experience (GTA experience acceptable). The candidate will also demonstrate an ability to maintain a safe environment in teaching laboratories, maintain and repair teaching equipment including telescopes, and effectively use learning management systems in face-to-face courses. Interest and ability to develop and teach an online laboratory course necessary. Previous Quality Matters training is a plus, although it could be completed on the job following appointment.Minimum of two years teaching experience (GTA experience acceptable).
