Job Details
The International Research Institute for Climate and Society of Columbia University invites applications for a Senior Staff Associate. The Senior Staff Associate will serve as part of IRI’s multidisciplinary team engaged in its mission to enhance society’s capability to understand, anticipate and manage the impacts of climate in order to improve human welfare and the environment, especially in developing countries. The IRI is a catalyst for the research, creation and provision of science-based outcomes that address climate risk. Our approach is based on collaborative partnerships with local, national, regional, international, public and private institutions facilitating the open exchange of ideas, information, and technology between many disciplines and regions.
Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree and 8 years of experience in climate science, geography, or related field or a Master’s degree and 4 years of related experience in climate science, geography, or related field required. Previous experience in creating seasonal or subseasonal forecasts for National Meteorological Services in developing countries using IRI’s Climate Predictability Tool (CPT) and IRI Data Library, or similar tools, is required. Proficiency in scientific programming languages such as Python, R or Matlab would be an advantage. Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written are essential. Willingness to travel frequently to conduct training courses in developing countries including Africa is essential.
Appointments are made on a fiscal year basis and are eligible for renewal each July 1, contingent upon performance and funding.
