Job Details

The Desert Research Institute is accepting applications for a mid-career to senior groundwater modeler in the area of numerical groundwater flow and/or contaminant transport modeling. This position is designed to complement and expand existing expertise within DRI's Division of Hydrologic Sciences in regard to quantitative analysis of groundwater flow and contaminant transport in a wide range of hydrogeologic environments. The position will be located at DRI’s Las Vegas campus and will be an integral part and leader of DRI’s groundwater modeling team, a portion of which is focused on groundwater contamination at underground nuclear test areas at the Nevada National Security Site. Within this team, the position has the opportunity to collaborate with hydrogeologists, hydrogeochemists, and numerical modelers developing flow and transport models as part of hydrogeologic investigations in complex natural systems often coupled with unique contamination issues.

The appointee will work in an interdisciplinary environment and collaborate with faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in ongoing research programs while establishing a research program in their own area of interest. Candidates are encouraged to review DRI’s research in hydrologic sciences (http://www.dri.edu/hydrologic-sciences and http://www.dri.edu/doe-nnsa-contract/ugta-project) as well as information about groundwater characterization programs at the Nevada National Security Site (http://nnss.gov/pages/programs/em/GroundwaterCharacterization.html) to identify links with existing research activities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • U.S. citizenship is required and the ability to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance is mandatory.  Please note that subsequent re-investigations may be required.
  • Ph.D. or M.S. degree from an accredited institution in hydrology/hydrogeology, engineering, or other related discipline
  • Broad understanding and experience in hydrogeologic processes and the application of groundwater flow and transport models to both research and regulatory problems
  • Background in applied or theoretical groundwater flow and/or contaminant transport modeling
  • Evidence of innovation and success in building, leading, and completing collaborative research programs in governmental, private sector, or university settings
  • Experience in competitive funding environments, with demonstrated success in conceiving and pursuing research programs and obtaining grants and/or contracts to support them
  • Ability to effectively analyze and report research findings to sponsors, at professional meetings, and in the peer-reviewed scientific literature
  • Research focus that is complementary with existing DRI programs
  • Excellent oral and written English-language communication skills
