The individual will serve as a research scientist with expertise in Earth science research using optical, infrared, passive microwave, active radar or other measurement techniques to enable a better understanding of weather processes in support of NASA’s Short-term Prediction Research Transition (SPoRT) project.  The research involves actively participating in scientific investigations with other scientists through the analysis of data obtained from satellites, airborne, ground-based observing platforms and the development of algorithms to retrieve geophysical parameters from these remote sensing observations. The inclusion of the resulting data and products in numerical modeling, data assimilation techniques, Earth system process studies, or decision support systems for end user applications is an expected outcome of the research activities.

Responsibilities:

Conduct intensive research investigations and / or application studies directed towards discovering, disseminating, and applying new and expanded knowledge in Earth and atmospheric sciences in support of the SPoRT project.

Serve as Principal Investigator, Co-Principal Investigator, supporting research scientist, or activity lead in the development, acquisition, and execution of Earth science projects through the competitive research process.  Responsibilities include setting research goals, the design of technical approaches and tool development, budgeting, and project scheduling.

Communicate scientific results to colleagues, internal and external to the organization, through community presentations and the peer review publication process to document and validate the quality of scientific research and in obtaining recognition as a technical expert by the scientific community.

Perform community service activities through active participation on committees, review panels, and teams to conduct scientific research and to support organizational activities both internal and external the organization.
