We are seeking a data engineer to join our team! You will initially support existing efforts to create/develop uniform meta-data standards through engagement with staff on multiple, cross-disciplinary projects that are executed both within and outside the department. You will have responsibility for the development and administration of user/technical-focused documentation in data management.

Additionally, you will provide consultation to researchers within different data domains—including seismic, infrasound, electromagnetic, radionuclide, optical, imagery—on these metadata standards and standard methodologies, and will act as liaison among multiple projects facilitating data collection/data usage/data exploitation by researchers. Over time, there will be opportunities to work with many complex data sets which span various phenomenologies and provide guidance/leadership for identifying & exploiting data across varying scientific domains.

This work may include work with domain authorities to identify data sources of interest, structure data, and develop data algorithms and models for data exploitation. This will be accomplished by coordinating with project teams to pursue both internal and external competitive funding opportunities. On any given day, you may be asked to:

  • Developing and maintaining data and metadata management processes/standard methodologies facilitating data curation
  • Curating datasets for different analytical tasks
  • Structuring complex data to facilitate ease of understanding, use, and exploitation
  • Providing consultation regarding data standards/standard methodologies to researchers in a variety of data domains
  • Working with domain experts—not necessarily data experts—to assimilate and document data and metadata requirements
  • Acting as a liaison between multiple projects facilitate in the data collection, data transfer, data usage, and data exploitation
  • Implementing developed data governance policies and standards to ensure quality, accuracy, longevity, access, and security of data
  • Creating and reviewing technical and user-focused documentation for data management
  • Working with multiple complex data sets spanning multiple phenomenologies
  • Becoming knowledgeable about different categories of unclassified controlled information (UCI) and classified information
  • Recommending and/or implementing appropriate mechanisms for sharing different categories of UCI and classified data
  • Provide guidance/leadership in identifying/exploiting data across multiple scientific domains
  • Create, develop, and implement solutions for metadata management processes/practices to facilitate data curation
  • Propose and develop automated metadata capture

Department Description:

We perform geophysical monitoring research and development in support of Sandia’s mission as a national security laboratory. We apply our geophysics expertise to address challenges surrounding ground-based nuclear detonation detection. This is accomplished through the research and development of 1) next generation algorithms exploiting multi-phenomenological data, 2) advanced sensor technologies, and 3) demonstration experiments.

The department has a broad range of expertise in field seismology and modeling, subsurface characterization, seismic, atmospheric acoustic and infrasound modeling, evaluation of seismic and infrasound sensors and systems, and the processing, analysis, and interpretation of all types of geophysical data. The department’s technical work spans the spectrum from theoretical to applied and includes strong modeling, lab and field data collection, and analysis capabilities. The department serves as Sandia’s resource for ground-based monitoring expertise, and we partner with departments across Sandia to integrate multiple types of data - including optical, seismic, electromagnetic, infrasound, atmospheric, radionuclide - to address broad national security needs.
