Job Details

Universität Hamburg is dedicated to sustainability, equal opportunity, and family-friendly policies. We also prize cultural diversity, communication, and interaction among people from different backgrounds and with different lifestyles.

As a University for sustainability, we put human resources development and especially the development and advancement of our early career researchers at the fore of our strategic endeavors. By strengthening the tenure-track professorship, Universität Hamburg has introduced a new career opportunity for early career researchers.

Due to the success of the tenure-track program run by the Ministry for Education and Research and to strengthen the research area/research areas Climate, Earth and Environment, Universität Hamburg invites applications for the following tenure-track professorship:

The Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences invites applications for a

TENURE-TRACK Professorship (W1 Tenure track leading to a W2) for methods of Machine learning in geophysics

commencing as soon as possible, Ref. no. JP 296.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate is expected to conduct basic research in the field of machine learning or, more generally, data-driven analyses in geophysics. We are especially interested in the application of these methods to problems in solid Earth geophysics, especially the propagation of seismic waves or subsurface imaging using the methods of applied geophysics. In addition to the development of machine learning strategies for (automated) data analysis, the candidate should draw conclusions about fundamental physical processes via reverse engineering. Synergies with the research being conducted in other research groups at the Institute of Geophysics is highly desirable.

Participation in the University’s core research area Climate, Earth and Environment is also a requirement of the position. Integrating climate-related research topics (e.g., carbon capture and storage (CCS), perma-frost) among other things is desirable. The candidate can cooperate with the Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN) and in current projects in the Cluster of Excellence Climate, Climatic Change, and Society (CLICCS) as well as initiate his or her own projects.

In both research and teaching, the candidate is expected to cooperate with other national and international institutions and to initiate the creation of new, externally funded research projects. We further expect the candidate to lead a scientific research group and take an active part in academic self-governance.

The successful candidate is expected to teach courses in geophysics in the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Geophysics as well as to participate in the teaching and supervision of doctoral candidates.

Section 12 subsection 7 sentence 2 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) applies.

Requirements:

Academic qualifications and additional requirements as specified in Section 18 HmbHG.

Additional criteria:

Applicants are expected to have international research experience in the field of machine learning in geophysics as well as initial experience in acquiring external funding and carrying out externally funded projects. Projects and publications as well as a broad interest in geophysics issues should attest to the applicant’s research activities. The University places particular emphasis on the quality of teaching and therefore requests that applicants provide details of their teaching experience and objectives.

The post holder is expected to acquire the language skills necessary to teach in German (Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) within two years of commencing employment providing he or she does not have the requisite skills when starting.

A tenure-track evaluation will be conducted during the second phase of the junior professorship in order to determine whether requirements for appointment to a W2 professorship have been met. Section 15 HmbHG applies. If the evaluation is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured W2 professorship. The regulations prohibiting internal appointments (Hausberufungsverbot) also apply to this junior professorship.

In accordance with Section 14 subsection 3 sentence 3 HmbHG, Universität Hamburg seeks to increase the proportion of women in teaching and research and encourages female academics to apply.

Qualified disabled candidates or applicants with equivalent status receive preference in the application process.

Hearings are scheduled to take place on 10 October 2019 and 11 October 2019.

The application deadline is 15 August 2019. Please submit your application with your CV, list of publications, teaching experience, external funding record, copies of certification and documents, three representative publications, teaching and research plans, and the reference number JP 296, preferably by email in a single PDF file, to: Bewerbungen@verw.uni-hamburg.de or per post to:
