Job Description

Become a member of our Tropical Cyclone Team and join our growing Research and Modeling Department. As the ALERT (AIR Loss Estimates in Real Time) scientist, you will be responsible for monitoring tropical cyclones, developing efficient tools to support all aspects of real-time model simulation, and providing expert analysis to other AIR teams and clients.

About the Day to Day Responsibilities of the Role

·       Be comfortable operating in a real-time environment including delivering time-sensitive analysis on tight deadlines

·       Collect, process and analyze all available data in real and near-real time to obtain the best possible representation of the event

·       Present results internally and externally to clients and government bodies

·       Monitor and analyze tropical weather globally

·       Interact with other teams to provide smooth delivery of ALERT postings to clients

·       Develop tools, build and run an efficient real-time ALERT modeling system

QUALIFICATIONS

About You and How You Can Excel in This Role

·       Solid tropical cyclone meteorological background

·       Strong programming skills gained through practical experience using high-level language and tools such as Python, C++, MATLAB, FORTRAN

·       Familiarity and comfort manipulating observational data sets and running models. Experience in data assimilation a plus

·       Proficiency in working in a Linux/Unix environment, including scripting in languages such as C-shell, Bash

·       Ability to gather, integrate, and critically analyze data from all relevant sources of natural hazard information such as national and international agencies, insurance data, private entities

·       Excellent written and verbal communication skills

 

REQUIREMENTS

·       3+ years professional experience in a technical environment

·       M.S. or Ph.D. degree in meteorology, geosciences or related fields
