Earth system modeling and carbon-climate-human system feedbacks researcher

Purpose

The Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory seeks an established scientist to develop and lead Earth system modeling research efforts, with particular focus on improved understanding and prediction of carbon-climate feedbacks, human-climate interactions, and coupled Earth system-human system implications of climate policy decision scenarios.

You will leverage ORNL’s world-class capabilities in Earth system model development, climate system feedback analysis, ecosystem-scale observation and experimentation, high performance computing, and data science to help answer pressing questions at the frontiers of climate change science, analysis of climate policy implications for coupled Earth system dynamics, and prediction of future ecosystem states in a changing climate system.

You will be dedicated to forming close collaborations among teams of observationalists, experimentalists, and modelers, working across the disciplinary boundaries of physical and biological science, ecosystem and human system science, applied computation and software architecture, to deliver comprehensive analytical capabilities for coupled Earth system prediction.

You will be encouraged and supported in developing and implementing a novel research vision connected to Earth system modeling at an unprecedented level of process resolution, spatial resolution, and representation of human system integration with physical, biological, and ecological systems.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications for the position include a PhD in a relevant scientific discipline, and at least 8 years of employment post-PhD in a research-oriented position. Additional qualifications include a strong publication record showing significant impact in one or more relevant fields of research, and excellent communication skills. Experience with project management is desirable.
